The Uphill Trust is a registered Scottish charity founded in 2015.

Our mission is to improve lives in rural western Uganda by supporting quality primary education for the young children who attend Uphill Junior School.

Many of the children who attend the school are from very poor farming families. The school actively encourages the education of girls, orphans and children from single-parent families hit by the devastating effects of HIV/AIDs or other endemic health problems.

Our current goals include a phased building programme to provide good quality classrooms with the necessary equipment and curriculum resources; helping to maintain a motivated, well-qualified teaching staff; and facilitating access to clean water and good sanitation.

A little of what we have here in the UK goes a long way in Uganda. Since we began working with Uphill Junior School we have bought two plots of land to provide a permanent home for the school. On this site we have built a good quality ventilated pit latrine block and constructed the first set of three classrooms. The Uphill Trust has also provided a water tanks; desks, chairs and chalkboards; Ugandan National Curriculum teaching resources; a starter pack of library books; a mosquito net and solar lantern for each teacher and pupil; as well as helping to pay the teachers’ salaries. Donated second-hand laptops and sports uniforms have also been taken out to the school.

The Uphill Trust is a NO OVERHEADS charity. All the funds raised by us directly benefit Uphill Junior School and its pupils. Please can you help us to provide a safe, clean, supportive learning environment to give the children of this poor rural community the start in life that they deserve.

Thank you for supporting our work through WowGive.

This is Laban, aged 12. When he is not at school he collects stones for his mother to break up (by hand) to sell as building aggregate. He comes from a large family and walks 2km to get to school each day. He is just one of many children who would benefit from having a sponsor

For the Trustees, our work is all about the children of Uphill Junior School. This trio of lovely girls are sisters - Phionah, Vanis and Norah. They have a brother who also attends Uphill but is camera shy, and an older brother in secondary school. They live in a tiny house near the school following extreme family financial difficulties. We first met wee Vanis when she was in Kindergarten - she 'graduated' top of the class then and is still doing well in Primary 1.

Now we have a new classroom block, we need a strong fence around the site to keep out wild and domestic animals who can damage the structures. But before the fence, comes the school gate - something that is always done with style in Uganda!
